Installation

Northern Escalators are responsible for installing many of the escalators that have entered service in the UK in the last 20 years. Our knowledge is vast and we have over 50 people in our team and over £2m of assets that only go to work on escalator installations and removals. We can :

• Do all site surveys and feasibility works
• Provide access to builders and structural engineers
• Provide storage, commissioning and transportation of your escalators from our 20,000 sq. ft warehouse and with our range of in house vehicles
• All installation requirements, wherever you are in the UK or Europe, 24 hours a day / 7 days a week. Some of our team are based in Europe, so are ready to go quickly, covering most European languages
• Kit out the work area for you, with hoardings and floor protection
• Provide all lifting equipment from our own plant pool, from small A frames and hoists to far bigger Valla and Hiab cranes.

Build Up & Commissioning

Installing your escalator involves effectively dropping (carefully!) the escalator into place and levelling it up. At that point, we sometimes finish our work.

However, most of our installations also require us to look after the build up, commissioning and testing using fully qualified engineers and technical resources :

Build up works typically include :

• Powering up inspections
• Setting and positioning pit covers and frames to "finished floor level"
• Installing balustrades and decking
• Powering up inspection, guides, chains, step installation, skirting, deckings and cladding installations
• Setting and adjustments to EN115 (European standard for the "Safety of escalators and moving walks. Construction and installation")

Commissioning works typically include :

• Checking for damage
• Escalator positioning
• Security of mechanical and electrical connections
• Checking that lubricants and grease have been applied and that fluid levels are correct
• safety and warning signs are in place and visible
• all moving parts are clear of obstruction, and
• that working clearances between combs, steps and skirtings are correct

Repairs & Handrails

Northern Escalator Installations works with all the major UK based Original Equipment Manufacturers ("OEMs"), being Kone, Otis, Schindler and Thyssen Krupp and is able to repair and refurbish all of their escalator types.

To support our repairs, we carry a small amount of our own stocks but can source parts for all makes of escalator, not just for the 4 OEMs above.

Our fleet of highly skilled repair and maintenance engineers also carry good stocks of regular replacement parts in order to repair most occasional breakdowns on-site.

Handrails :

A major repair area for us is handrail repairs. Presently, Northern Escalators carries out around £0.5m of handrail repair work a year, for all the major OEMs and purchased from the major European handrail manufacturers (EHC and Semperit).

We can provide plain handrails or logo handrails, and are working with partners (including the OEMs) to install UV light and invisible gas products directly to handrails to protect against Covid spreading risks. Basically, we're always innovating. Contact us to find out more
